Itinerary of 3 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour:

Day 1:Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Dades Valley

The 3 days Marrakech to Fes desert tour starts with an early pick-up from your accommodation or the airport in Marrakech. We’ll drive through the scenic High Atlas Mountains and cross the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, making stops to take in the stunning views.

Our first major stop is the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historic site has been featured in films such as Gladiator, Alexander, and The Mummy, as well as the TV series Game of Thrones. After exploring the Kasbah, we head to Ouarzazate, often referred to as “The Gate of the Desert.”

After some free time for lunch, we’ll continue our journey to the Rose Valley, passing through the expansive Skoura palm grove. We’ll conclude the day by driving to Boumalne Dades, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 2:Dades Gorges – Tinghir – Merzouga Dunes – Camel Trekking – Merzouga Luxury Camp

After breakfast, we start the day with a drive through the Dades Valley. We’ll stop at a viewpoint overlooking the valley to admire the dramatic landscape of the Dades Gorges. Next, we head to Todra Gorges, where the Todra River has carved out an impressive canyon with towering red cliffs. Feel free to explore the gorges and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Following our visit to Todra, we continue through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad, with free time for lunch along the way.

In the afternoon, we arrive at the Sahara Desert in Merzouga. Here, you’ll switch to camels for a trek across the vast sandy dunes. We’ll pause to watch the spectacular sunset from the top of a high dune. Then, we’ll head to a luxury desert camp where you can experience traditional Berber music and dance around the campfire under a starlit sky. Enjoy dinner and spend the night in the comfort of the camp.

Day 3:Merzouga Dunes – Erfoud – Midelt – Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fes

On the final day of your 3 days Marrakech to Fes desert tour, wake up early to witness the stunning sunrise over the desert. After breakfast, you’ll ride camels back to Merzouga where your driver will be waiting. We’ll then leave the desert and head to Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet. Rissani remains a significant trading hub, with its bustling souk especially lively on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Enjoy a stroll through the Rissani souk before we continue to Erfoud, where you’ll visit a workshop specializing in fossilized marble.

We’ll drive along the Ziz River, stopping for a panoramic view of the Ziz Valley. After a lunch break in Midelt, we’ll proceed to the Cedar Forest, home to the Barbary macaques. Feel free to feed them while exploring the forest. Our journey continues to Ifrane, known for its cool climate, alpine-style houses, and its nickname as the “Switzerland of Morocco.” Finally, we’ll drop you off at the airport or your accommodation in Fes, concluding your 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour.

FAQ

What is the closest desert to Marrakech?

The closest desert to Marrakech is the Zagora Desert, located about 6-7 hours away by car. This makes it ideal for a quick 2 day desert tour if you’re short on time. However, for a fuller Sahara experience, a 3-day tour to Merzouga is recommended to reach the larger, iconic dunes of Erg Chebbi.

If you seek iconic Sahara landscapes, Merzouga is worth the longer trip; for a convenient, shorter experience, Zagora is ideal.
